technical info

First mountainous finish in a stage clearly divided into two parts: the first, up to Ponte Secchia, rises gently across the Po valley, while the last 12 km are much steeper all the way to the finish. The first part is characterised by the crossing of numerous villages in the Reggio Emilia area before entering the Secchia valley and ascending it to the foot of the final, cat. 2, ascent. The last climb, about 11 km, is the first KOM of the Giro and features a first part at around 6%, followed by a slightly easier section after the village of La Collina.
Last kilometres
The last few kilometres are quite nervous. The girls will face a short descent before hitting the ramp that leads to the centre of Toano with gradients of up to 12%. The road climbs steadily to the finish line with gradually decreasing gradients. The finish line is on a straight asphalt road, 300 m long and 6 m wide.

Sabbioneta

Overview

Included together with Mantua in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 2008, Sabbioneta was built in about thirty-five years at the behest of Prince Vespasiano Gonzaga. The city is a perfect example of the application of Renaissance theories in the field of town planning and the design of an ideal city: the buildings of historical and artistic interest still bear witness to this today, as do the sumptuous examples of figurative art in Renaissance style that bear the signature of important authors from Lombardy, Emilia and the Venetian school.

Toano

Overview

Toano is located in the hills, between Val Secchia and the Apennine ridge; it is an important agricultural center for the production of Parmigiano Reggiano. It is about 50 km from Reggio Emilia.

The capital is located on mount Castello (944 m.), and on the top we find the medieval parish church of Santa Maria di Castello. The area offers everything needed to have a pleasant holiday: a swimming pool, sports facilities, hiking or mountain trails and a well-structured accommodation offering, in addition to many events. Toano is part of the UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines.
